As a key contributor to the automation project at the East Container Terminal (ECT) of Colombo Port, I played a major role in the successful implementation of this groundbreaking initiative. Colombo Port, one of South Asia’s most important transshipment hubs, connects vital trade routes across Europe, East and South Asia, the Persian Gulf, and East Africa. With its strategic importance and a capacity of handling 2.5 million TEUs annually, the modernization of this port was essential to meet growing demands and enhance operational efficiency.
In this project, my responsibilities included supporting the re-engineering of existing processes to enable the implementation of landside automation. I was actively involved in the integration of the N4 terminal operating system with advanced technologies from industry leaders like ABB, Cathay Nabula, and Camco Solutions. This integration was crucial in ensuring seamless communication between various systems, optimizing the efficiency and productivity of the port’s operations.
Additionally, I played a significant role in coordinating with these vendors, managing relationships, and ensuring that the project progressed smoothly despite its complexities. The successful execution of the ECT automation project not only set new standards for port operations in Asia but also contributed to positioning Colombo Port as a leading maritime hub, further strengthening its role in global trade.
Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has made significant strides with the development of the East Container Terminal (ECT) at Colombo Port, a key project that positions the port as a major hub in South Asia. This terminal is a crucial part of SLPA’s strategy to expand its capacity to 14 million TEUs, with the first phase expected to add 1.8 million TEUs by 2024, eventually growing to 3.6 million TEUs by 2025.
The project involves state-of-the-art automation, with SLPA selecting ABB to provide 40 fully automated stacking cranes, which will significantly enhance the terminal’s operational efficiency. The integration of these cranes with the Terminal Operating System (TOS) will ensure that Colombo Port remains competitive on the global stage, particularly in the transshipment market where Colombo is already a leader.
In this project, I played a major role in collaborating with different vendors, including ABB, Cathay Nabula, and Camco Solutions, to integrate their systems with the N4 terminal operating system. This integration is crucial for the successful automation of landside operations, which is the first stage of the project. Our team’s ability to re-engineer the current processes and propose optimal solutions was pivotal in winning this tender, which marks a significant achievement for Access International and underscores Colombo Port’s commitment to modernization and efficiency

“We are thrilled to be running with N4 so we can provide the best possible service to our customers through new and automated processes which will help optimize our operations at the port.”
